5 Free Indie Demos You Can Play Right Now on Steam
Five free downloads, no commitment: raft building, rhythm slapping, comic-book survival and a polygon that fights back — all playable on Steam today.
Every game in the ESPORT4YOU library has a free demo on Steam. That is deliberate: the cheapest way to judge an indie game is to play a slice of it, and all five of these slices cost nothing. This roundup walks through each one — what there is to try, where to grab it, and which games are out now versus still on the way.
One disclosure, made once: all five titles happen to be by OverLKD Studio, a one-person studio from Waldbrunn, Germany, and we cover them the way we would cover any studio's games. Three are released — By My Side on July 17, 2026, SlapGains on August 25 and Tidewrack on August 31. INKBORN and PARRYGON are still listed as Coming soon, with playable demos already up.
Tidewrack: driftwood, a harpoon and no land in sight
"A few logs, one harpoon, no land in sight. Pull driftwood from the sea and build your raft into a floating town."
That is the Steam page's own summary of Tidewrack, released August 31, 2026, and the demo is the way to test it. Pull driftwood from the sea, build it into the raft, and keep building until the raft stops being a raft and starts being a floating town. Threats stack on top of the construction: raiders come at night, sharks circle, and somewhere out there a leviathan is waiting. You can also leave the surface to explore the ocean floor. Play is solo or with friends invited straight from Steam, so a lone run tells you whether the building loop holds before you draft a crew. The free demo is live, and the game is also sold directly at the OverLKD Store.
SlapGains: reps on the beat, slaps in the arena
SlapGains, out since August 25, 2026, is a rhythm game in a boxing robe. You train in a neon gym, walk into the arena, and slap your way through five leagues from Bronze to Diamond, where one hit decides the match. The hook is visible body progression: thicker arms, broader shoulders, stronger legs, depending on what you train — your routine gets written onto your character. Every rep lands on the beat. The category list includes full controller support, Steam Cloud, Steam Leaderboards and Family Sharing. The free demo is the place to check whether that rhythm clicks for you.
By My Side: wash up, chop wood, meet the dog
By My Side is the studio's first release, out since July 17, 2026. You wash up with nothing but your hands; from there it plays as open-world survival and crafting — chop wood, build a home, expand the base — against harsh seasons, wolf packs and a wilderness that fights back. The signature is the stray dog that joins you if you choose to take him in, loyal to the end. The multiplayer categories are notable: Online Co-op and LAN Co-op both appear, a pairing that has become rare on Steam. The free demo lets you test the survival loop before you bring a friend into it.
INKBORN: trace an axe, hold an axe
INKBORN is the strangest of the five. You wake up in a comic nobody finished, and an eraser is eating the world from the edge of the page. Your sketchbook is the weapon system: trace an axe and you are holding an axe. Everything costs ink, which turns every drawn weapon into a trade-off, and the eraser sets the clock — you color the page back in before it is gone. Up to four players can play. INKBORN is Coming soon, but the free demo is playable now, and the Steam page doubles as the wishlist page.
PARRYGON: Pong folded into a shrinking polygon
PARRYGON refolds Pong into a closed polygon. You hold one run of the wall and every other side belongs to somebody else. Parry inside a tight window to charge the orb; lose a wall and the arena drops that side for good and rebuilds smaller, so the room closes in on whoever is left. Angles win; panic loses. The categories flag Shared/Split Screen PvP with full controller support — a same-couch game by design. PARRYGON is Coming soon, with a playable demo already up.
Where demos and Next Fest meet
Steam's Next Fest is built on this exact format: a recurring festival where the storefront surfaces demos for about a week and wishlists follow the downloads. A live, free demo is effectively the price of admission — a demo festival needs demos. All five games here clear that bar, and the two Coming soon titles, INKBORN and PARRYGON, fit the profile the event is made for: playable today, unfinished, wishlistable. We cannot promise either will surface in a future edition; what we can say is that neither needs a festival to be worth an evening. Try the demo, and if it lands, the wishlist button does the rest.
Free demo FAQ
Are these demos really free?
Yes — all five demos are free on Steam. Tidewrack, SlapGains, By My Side, INKBORN and PARRYGON each offer a downloadable demo at no cost; the full games are separate purchases on their store pages.
Do demo saves carry over to the full game?
We cannot confirm carry-over for these titles. Each game's Steam page has the authoritative details on saves and progress, so check there before committing a long evening to a demo run.
