By My Side Is a Survival Game About a Dog

By My Side starts like every survival game and ends like few of them: with a stray dog who joins you if you choose to take him in, loyal to the end.

Most survival games would bury the dog in a bullet point, halfway down the feature list. By My Side puts him in the title. Released on July 17, 2026 on Steam, this open-world survival and crafting game is the first release from OverLKD Studio, a one-person studio based in Waldbrunn, Germany, and its emotional architecture rests on a single line of its store description: a stray dog joins you, if you choose to take him in, loyal to the end.

"You wash up with nothing but your hands. Chop wood, build a home, and survive harsh seasons, wolf packs, and a wilderness that fights back. Along the way, a stray dog joins you if you choose to take him in, loyal to the end."

Take the dog out and what remains is a familiar silhouette: wash up empty-handed, chop, build, endure. Keep the dog in, and every one of those systems picks up a second meaning. That substitution is the design worth examining.

The stray joins you if you choose to take him in — the choice is the game's first real decision.

First, you choose him

The phrasing is the mechanic. The dog joins you if you choose to take him in — an offer, not an unlock. He does not simply attach himself after a scripted beat; the store page frames companionship as a decision you make. The game's first real question, in other words, is not where to build but whether to say yes.

That opt-in does quiet, persistent work. A companion you chose is a companion you answer for, and the systems that follow — the home you expand, the seasons you outlast — inherit the weight of that yes.

Loyal to the end

The description's closing phrase, loyal to the end, is deliberately unfinished. The end of what? The page does not say, and the ambiguity is doing the emotional lifting: it converts the dog from a mechanic into a promise whose terms you learn only by living the game.

So does the title. "By My Side" is not a description of gameplay; it is a position — the place the dog holds relative to you. Games tend to name themselves after the threat or the map. This one names itself after the friend.

A wilderness that fights back

The threat list is short and specific: harsh seasons, wolf packs, and a wilderness the store page says "fights back." You begin with nothing but your hands, which makes the opening a pure gathering problem before it ever becomes a fighting one. The verbs are honest ones — chop wood, build a home, expand the base — and every expansion is insurance against whatever the next season sends.

The wolf packs deserve a second look. Your companion is a stray dog; the threats beyond your walls are canids hunting in numbers. The store page never remarks on the symmetry, but it is hard to miss: one of these animals chose your fire, and the rest chose the dark. Whether the game leans on that contrast is a question the free demo answers better than any feature list can.

Seasons get exactly one adjective — harsh — and it is the adjective that does the most work in this genre. A hard winter asks the usual things of a base: fuel, food, walls. What it asks of a household of two is the part By My Side gets to define.

Built for company

For a game about loyalty, it fits that By My Side is not a solitary affair. Steam files it under Adventure, Indie, and Simulation, with a category list that reads as follows:

  • Single-player and Multi-player, so the lone playthrough is supported
  • Co-op, Online Co-op, and LAN Co-op — the full trio of shared-play tags
  • Steam Achievements, plus a Camera Comfort tag alongside them

LAN Co-op is the rare inclusion on that list — the box a game ticks when two machines in one room are the plan. There is something fitting about a companionship game that can be played in company: the dog at your heel, a friend at the second keyboard. The categories, at minimum, make the arrangement possible.

A studio's first release

As debuts go, By My Side set a tempo. OverLKD Studio has shipped two more games since: Tidewrack, the raft-building co-op survival game released on August 31, 2026, and SlapGains, a rhythm slap-combat title that arrived on August 25. Two more, Inkborn and Parrygon, are listed as coming soon. We follow all of it in the news section.

Taking him home

By My Side is out now on Steam, and the free demo is the natural place to meet the stray and make the choice the game is named for. It is also listed on the developer's own OverLKD Store page. The companionship is the hook; the seasons, the wolf packs, and a home that grows room by room are the reason the world around the dog holds up.
